Skiing as sport is in it’s infancy in China, a phenomenon of the country’s exploding middle class. As a means of survival however, it is thousands of years old, a stone age hunter-gatherer technology born in the Altai mountains where China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and Siberia merge. On a vast trajectory that spans 11,000km of Northern China, Chad Sayers and Forrest Coots touch down into the rich past and dizzying future of these two respective Chinese ski cultures. As one rapidly expands, they find the other is at risk of disappearing.

A documentary style action sports film, is the third Shades of Winter feature by Austrian producer and pro skier Sandra Lahnsteiner, who keeps redefining women’s freeskiing with her movies.
The film BETWEEN, a Red Bull Media House co-production, filmed in Ultra HD 4K (DP Mathias Bergmann), follows Sandra and her team both on and off the mountains and documents them overcoming challenges, adapting to difficult circumstances as well as compelling journeys and thrilling destinations. This film isn’t just about the epic moments on snow or in the water, but also about the desire and struggles it takes to get there both physically and mentally.
